An Interesting Turn of Phrase

By Grant Goodman

I was listening to a TED podcast today when the speaker used a very new and interesting phrase: "keynote listener". He was speaking regarding a very influential politician that his group had asked to be a keynote listener. Everybody in the audience laughed, but I thought, "What a great concept".

We are so used to having keynote speakers, that the thought of having a keynote listener sounds strange.

The concept is strange but it had the desired effect. The politician came to the conference and listened to what the participants were saying. The fact that he came, listened and acted on what he heard shows the power of the concept.

As we chart new territory in the move to sustainability and resilience the ability to listen as well as speak is crucial.

Direct yet simple truth, Grant.
Having two ears and one mouth should give us the clue as to what is important.

Oh definitely, very good point. The audience is just as important as the panel, and without the audience the speakers are one hand clapping in the forest. And the more important the audience, the better, though it is hard to qualify the 'importance' of an audience. Your example mentions a VIP politico - important because as you say he/she might act on the ideas expressed. But the speakers might also make a lasting impression on a bunch of schoolchildren who in their own way might act on the ideas.

I would assume that a keynote listener would take notes rather than bring notes.
