Breaking Out of the Mold
By Grant Goodman
Life can be like cooking: You can live according to a recipe or Live with zest, vitality and originality. There are benefits to both approaches. The first approach is the one taken by McDonalds and the result is consistent, bland but reliable. The second is risky and the results can be unexpected but truly original and awe inspiring. I spent the first half of my life following others, doing things by the book and this caused me to become very predictable and boring. If anyone had tried to predict the second half of my life based on the first they would have been way off base. I lived in the same town, apart from leaving to study, got a good job in my profession, raised a family, attended church and was a good citizen. It was a solid life but constricted. When I turned 35 I started taking risks figuring that life was short and that if I didn't stretch a little I would wither and die inside. The first risk was shifting to another town and taking on a new job. Then I got asked to join a project by my company and it has been all excitement since then. I got headhunted from that company to a software startup with a global presence. Within a month of joining the new company I was posted to Bangkok and then to San Francisco. That led to business in the UK and Australia and now I am in the UK for five years. I have completed a Masters degree, done a BA in Humanities to expand my horizons and had a near death experience after being hit by a car while out walking the dog. What I learned is that the more risks you take, the easier it is to take more of them. It makes life exciting and you lose your reliance on having a safe niche. I have no idea where the rest of my life will take me but I am sure it will be a gourmet experience. So loosen up and take a risk, you might be surprised with the results. I wouldn't advise getting hit by a car though!! They are very solid and break bones. |

Life can be like cooking: You can live according to a recipe or Live with zest, vitality and originality. Loved that similarity!Definitely vote for the difficult choice of originality rather than the comfy "recipe solution". Merry Christmas, Joanne
We have to be a little careful when we cook with zest, that the pot doesn't boil over and spill the beans. Great intel. Frederick
I like your philosophy. I, too, am taking more risks as I get older. Not physical risks, but lifestyle. I know too many people my age who have died or have serious illnesses. I'm "living for today".
