Caught in a Major Earthquake

I was on holiday in New Zealand on the 22nd of February 2011 when an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck Christchurch. I was in Christchurch to visit family and was on the phone when the quake struck. The room I was in was shaken hard and seemed to move in a number of directions. It felt like I was trying to ride a bucking bronco. The quake went on for about 20 seconds but in that time hundreds of people lost their lives. I was not scared but it was a travel experience with a difference. I checked out that those in the house were OK and checked for damage. We lost power, phone, sewage and water but the house was not damaged. Unfortunately my daughters house that was closer to the Central Business District sustained major damage. Regular aftershocks kept coming and it is eerie when you hear the rumble before the next quake hits. The next few days were a bit like camping. We had to cook our food on a camping stove, collect rain water and spend the evenings using candlelight. The lack of sewage became a problem as all the sewers had been damaged. Luckily my brother in law was able to knock up a makeshift toilet outside. All of my family were OK if somewhat shaken up and it was difficult not being able to get accurate information. My daughter had a radio on her mobile and we used this to hear the news about what was going on. It was several days later that we saw the TV coverage and saw the full extent of the damage. I am now back in the UK but will never forget the experience. My thoughts are with all those people who lost loved ones in the quake which is the worst natural disaster in New Zealand for 80 years. |

I'm glad you, and your family survived this devastating and frightening experience. God's blessing was that you are still here to talk about it. My prayers are with all the people in Christchurch, New Zealand..

Of those who died because of disasters in this period, almost 60 percent were killed by earthquakes. This “natural hazard” continues to pose a serious risk, given that 8 of the 10 cities with the largest populations worldwide lie on earthquake-prone fault lines. The last ten years have seen more than 780,000 people killed in 3,852 events classified as disasters.
You were very fortunate to live through the quake.
