Humans - a Bag of Ideas

By Grant Goodman

I love reading books, listening to podcasts and reading and writing blogs. Last week I was considering who I was and what made me human. I came to the conclusion that I am just a bag of thoughts and ideas. In fact, we are all an amalgam of our thoughts, ideas and experiences but each one of us has a different mix and number of connections.

One of the benefits of getting older is that the number of connections between our thoughts, ideas and experiences increases and the richness and breadth of the content grows. One thought picked up from a book or a blog posting triggers similar or opposing thoughts and conclusions. The frequency of "aha" (or eureka) moments also grows exponentially.

In a sense there are no unique thoughts, just original distillations of the thoughts of others.

Thank you for sharing your "aha moment". It's a clever notion. Now and then I may feel like an empty bag.

Its something that you will notice when you get older - something to look forward to!! Grant

I once read that humans are essentially tubes. Something goes in one end and comes out the other end. At nighttime the tubes become horizontal. During the day the tubes are vertical, and often rapidly open and close the top end of the tube. When things have difficulty going down into the tube or coming out of the tube, the tube is nearing the end of its lifespan.

I'd say a "bag of ideas" is preferrable to being thought of as a tube. Thanks for sharing.

So very true, esp. about how one thing triggers related thoughts and we begin connecting them.

Nice work,Grant.
You're right about age being a factor in the increase of our experiences and also gives us oldies an opportunity to express our ideas. Sometimes, nobody cares, but they listen out of respect for our age.
Keep up the good work.
Frederick
