Live Life - Take a Risk
To get the best out of life, you have to take some calculated risks. The un-risky or completely safe way of life is not worth living (and is in fact impossible). In every human occupation and pre-occupation risk is involved. Remember the risk inherent in your first kiss? Would you do it right, would you in fact be able to do it, what if you were terrible at kissing? But for the vast majority of us, we took the risk and enjoyed the experience. While I was growing up we (my friends and I) were given a lot of freedom. We biked all over the neighbourhood, up to 10 miles from home, we went fishing, shooting, had fun with dynamite (the punishment afterwards was not fun, but the explosion was very gratifying!!)and generally did what boys did in the 1950's - and no doubt would like to do now if given a chance. We had no inclination or time to sit in front of a TV set all day. Today society has got very risk averse. We drive our kids to school, we track there whereabouts every minute of the day and don't let them grow up be learning for themselves. We had pocket knives, sheath knives, axes, air rifles, shangais (or catapults)and most of us still have the requisite number of eyes, legs, arms and other bodily parts. I worked for 3 years as a Risk Manager for a large healthcare organisation and I saw some real risk. But that did not stop me having some adventures, riding motorcycles, hiking in the back country, jumping off high banks into rivers and other fun but risky things. I don't go out to be stupid, the risks I take are calculated but it certainly adds some spice to my life. Better to wear out than rust out. DK |
