Musical Appreciation Grows with Age

By Grant Goodman

Last week I noticed something - my appreciation of music has changed. I have been a long time music lover and have over 6000 songs on my iPods from a variety of influences from classical to garage hiphop.

I was walking to work with my iPod on and I began to notice a lot more going on beneath the surface of themusic, I was beginning to notice the motets and underlying harmonies more than ever before. This is really exciting as it has made me listen more closely to my music. I'm not sure what happened, why or for how long but while it lasts I am revelling in it.

It may be that I am more relaxed and listening now for genuine pleasure. Maybe it it because I am getting older and its a network thing of having more connections to draw on. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Congrats Grant, on your new found appreciation. Not for nothing is music called the "universal language".

Thanks Jame. I am really making the most of it in case it disappears!!

I have noticed the same thing in the last couple of years. My musical tastes have changed and I think it is because I am more selective. I enjoy music more than I used to because I actually HEAR it.

It ain't gonna disappear. It's only gonna get "gooder"...

Your description so much reminds me of the 'evolution' of my attitude to classical music. You know, the very first encounter with it (when i was really young) was, little to say, a big 'misunderstanding :) However, when I learnt to look 'deeper' with time and see the essence of things behind the beautiful sounds - IT CAME to me, the appreciation, value and admiration of classics...
