My First Cyber Xmas Gift Unwrapping

By Grant Goodman

Thanks to the wonders of the webcam I have just had my first Cyber Xmas Gift opening ceremony. Currently my youngest daughter and myself are in the UK whilst my other two daughters and my wife are in New Zealand (NZ). I was not able to get back to NZ due to work pressures but we decided to have a video linkup via webcam.

Ever since the kids have been little we have observed a family ritual of sitting in a circle and opening our presents one by one in turn (why oh why do mine run out first!!). The kids are all grownups now but the ritual persists.

Given we are in the UK we are 13 hours behind New Zealand so we had the pleasure of watching the rest of the family opening their presents while we enjoyed a lovely white Xmas Eve in England.

It was almost as good as being there and much better than last year when I was on my own here.

So tomorrow the New Zealanders get to see us open our pressies.

Merry Xmas to one and all.

Upon reading Breaking out of the Mold I had assumed that you had abandoned your family as you sought your personal reinvention overseas. I do humbly apologise for having assumed wrong! And you have my utmost respect for upholding a family tradition even though the kids are all grown up.

I can see how you might have got that idea. I have been happily married for 32 years and my wife has been with me throughout my adventures.

We had a beautiful white Christmas here in New England with children and grandchildren.
Thank you for sharing your Christmas with us.

What a great idea. In the past, people have tape recorded greetings or made a home movie and mailed them to family and friends. And of course, now digital photos are easy to take and send. My Apple iMac has a webcam already installed and I never thought to use it.

Give it atry and let me know how you get on. I use GoogleChat which allows you to use your webcam and it is very easy to use. I went to a family cyber party the other night, it was fun and slimming as I couldn't eat or drink any of the food.
