My First Flight
By Grant Goodman
I was thirteen, the year was 1968. My parents had skimped and saved to buy me a ticket to fly from Nelson to Christchurch in New Zealand. I was highly excited as only a aeroplane mad boy could be. We got to the aerodrome, as it was then called, half an hour early. Unfortunately it was raining so we had to take a bus ride for one and a half hours to get to the nearest airport that was open. This was in a place called Blenheim. I hopped on the aircraft which was a Douglas Dakota DC3. It was unnerving walking up the aisle which was at an angle to the ground. Sitting in my window seat I was entranced and scared at the same time. We taxied out and then rumbled up the runway and yipee we were airborne. Apart from a slight bout of air sickness at the start I thoroughly enjoyed my first flight. We flew over the Southern Alps and the views were magnificent. All to soon we reached Christchurch and I had to get off. It was a wonderful experience and it was only years later that I realised the hardship my parents had to go through to scrape up the money for the fare. |

I can just imagine the awe and wonder in a boy's face as he experiences his first flight. Flying over mountains in New Zealand must have been particularly spectacular. A memory to treasure! By the way, congratulations on being blessed with a very good memory. I wish I could remember my first flight with clarity but it is blurred like much of my past.
What a memorable experience! I enjoy flying but road travel is great too. We have some pretty tall mountains here but nothing like the Alps. It's nice to read about other's personal experiences and thoughts. I will be back to read more of your intels, soon. Laraine
