My Love of Trains

By Grant Goodman

I love trains. I'm not a train spotter and I have no interest in what the different types of train are. What I love is the sensation of traveling on a train. The rocking motion is very good for putting me into a relaxing sleep. I have just got off a train after taking a 3.5 hr trip from London to Newcastle. It was great. Night time travel after a long day. I grabbed a coffee, got seated and kicked back into relaxation mode. Very soon I was asleep...bliss. I woke up refreshed and ready to hit the road when I got off the train.

England has a great train service and I prefer train travel to air travel. No long queues, no interminable security checks, and an opportunity to relax.

One of these days I will take one of the big rail trips such as the Trans-Siberian or the Sydney to Perth train via Melbourne.

Any other train travel enthusiasts out there?

I was wondering where you were. Yes, I miss the trains. There are none in the Philippines. Instead we have 15,000 smoke-belching, 150-decibel, highly hazardous motorized tricycles doing what one train can do.

Hey there,
My Nick comes from song by Slim Dusty Abalinga Mail. It is about the earlier Ghan, Adelaide to The Alice.

Ahh, the Ghan another great train ride I believe and I really like Slim Dusty.

Americans need to fall "back in love" with trains, as they first loved them when the west was won.
We could take a lot of cars and trucks off the road of pollution.
Thank you for sharing, Grant.

I agree. Trains are very efficient and America has great train routes. When I woked in Oakland I used to love to hear the Amtrak trains and freight trains going through during the night.

My dad's dad was an engineer and retired from the railroad here in the USA. We use to ride the trains into the city to go shopping and meet my dad at his office. I loved it and miss it. One day I will do as you and go for a long train ride! Hope you take pictures and share them when you do!

I will write an intel and add pictures when I do the trip

I am fascinated with the old steam locomotives. We have one here that makes weekend trips in Chehalis, WA and there is one in Elbe, WA. The one in Elbe runs on used motor oil. Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad, Elbe, Washington USA

I would like to know how much a ticket costs to ride on the outside of the train. Hopefully none of those people fall asleep. Interesting Intel.

I'm not sure what the fare is lol. May be expensive like bungy jumping.
