Poetry - a Way of Expression and Thought

By Grant Goodman

Poetry represents a wonderful form of words in juxtaposition. When I was young I had no time for poetry. Poetry seemed to consist of rhymed lines where the rhyming words were often contrived. As I have "matured" my feelings for and attitude to poetry have changed.

The change occurred when I started writing poetry for myself. I must admit that it was awkward at first , but writing poetry released something from within. I got a real buzz when some of my poems got published and I have been scribbling ever since.

Poetry is a very powerful vehicle for self expression and thought capture. There is something very satisfying about condensing ones thoughts into a poem. One has to consider carefully the words and their relationships to themselves and to the topic at hand.

As I have been writing for several years now, a quick look back at my poems reveals a snapshot of my life: a ride on the bus, an early morning walk with my daughter, the Xmas Tree and so on.

The other development is my passion for reading other peoples poetry. My favorites to date are Langston Hughes, Philip Larkin, James.K.Baxter, Tony Harrison, W.B. Yeats and Ted Hughes. I love poetry in many forms.

My poems are not masterpieces but give me a way to express my memories and thoughts for later consideration and recall.

Why don't you try it for yourself, you may be surprized with the results.
