Reading to Widen your Horizons
Are you a keen reader? If yes, do you read widely across genres or do you focus your reading on one genre? (e.g. chicklit, crime). The key to expanding your horizons and to keep learning is to read widely and voraciously. This allows you to make valuable connections between subject areas such as between literature and history. I have been reading voraciously since I was eight, and now in my fifties I am amazed at the connections I am making. Another way to build these connections is to learn another language and to read in that language. I have learned French and German and find it challenging to read (notably simpler!) books in these languages. A key to this cross-fertilization is to read about things that have no interest to you initially. As a case in point, I was given a book about birdwatching (or birding as the experts call it)for Xmas. I have never shown any interest in birdwatching, but because it was a gift, I persevered and read it. Surprise, surprise I enjoyed it and have taken a fresh look at the world around me. Apparently, Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, subscribes to a number of publications across fields and political persuasion including those he disagrees with. He feels that this helps to keep his mind alert and open to ideas. So set out to the library or the bookshop and pick up a book about something outside of your comfort zone, you may open a whole new vista on life. |
