Rewriting - the Art of a Good Writer
By Grant Goodman
Ernest Hemingway a famous author said, "There are no great writers only great re-writers". These are prophetic words for the writer new and old. Writing is about revisions, additions, deletions, replacement of key words and phrases with others i.e Re-writing. One of the disadvantages of writing on a computer is that one only views the finished product, the evolutionary cycle that takes place is not seen as readily as for drafts done on paper. As a poet I am amazed how much thought can go into writing even a small poem. The first cut is the easiest and then the changes begin. Doesn't scan right, the sound of that word doesn't fit, I think that line should shift and so on. In this sense a poem is an evolving work of art and even famous poets revise some of their poems between editions. There are very few writers who can dash off a masterpiece without thought or deliberation. Of course for the writer seeking publication the re-writing will also come from the editor. Don't let that put you off, as the re-writing process itself is enjoyable. Guess what? I just went and revised this before submitting, sound familiar? |

It has taken me some years to get comfortable with re-writing. I'm just now starting a doctoral degree program, so I know I'm in for a few more years of writing exercises. And this time I know there will be professors looking over my work, so re-writing will be necessary and important. Well written intel! Rodger

Hi Rodger You are right of course. I have been away from academia too long. You certainly won't get a doctorsal thesis through without significant rewriting and searching of the soul, good luck. Grant
I've just started writing after I joined Qondio. Your intel has good information and I need all the help that I can get. Thank you. Frederick
I re-wrote this comment at least 7 times. Not sure if I'm refining my work or flogging a dead horse, but I'm doing my best.

Hi nick, I love your sense of humour
Writings remain a work in progress. Many of mine are every really finished, an idea will pop and it have a home for it in something I already did or something I am about to start.
