Riding a Motor Scooter in Rarotonga If riding a scooter in Rarotonga was any more fun, it would probably be illegal. We hired a couple of scooters during our stay in Rarotonga and didn't want to give them back at the end. This is the most common way to get around the island. You need a motorcycle license but if you already have one in your own country you can get your Cook Island motorcycle license for a $10 NZD fee. Otherwise you get a free lesson and then do a quick ride with a police officer and you will have your license. There are many places on the island to hire scooters from. The average rate is about $14 NZD a day, or less if you hire for 7 days (recommended). Helmets are not compulsory, but I would say that you should get one (they come free with the scooter). Most riders don't war a helmet, but there are usually 5 deaths a year from head injuries caused by non helmet wearing! The speed limit is 40km/hr around the towns and 60km/hr (36 MPH)on the open road so you won't be having a high speed accident. There is a lot to see and having transport allows you to explore some of the back roads. It takes less than an hour to circumnavigate the island on the main road. Most of the scooters are 125cc so they can carry 2 passengers easily. Give it a go you won't be disappointed.
