Snow - a view from the Sub Tropics

By Grant Goodman

Having grown up in the sub tropics snow was not a feature of the landscape. I am now entering into my second winter in the North of England and I have become intimately acquainted with the positive and negative attributes of snow.

Positive Attributes

Snow is beautiful

Snow is very white and freshens up any landscape

Snow is silent when it falls

Snow feels good on the tongue

Snow sounds great on an umbrella

Negative Attributes

Snow is cold

Snow turns to slush

Snow is hard to drive in

Snow is hard to clear

Snow disrupts flights and road trips

We had a snowstorm over the weekend and we also lost our central heating, hot water and gas fire. At this stage I got a new perspective on snow. It is much better looking out at snow from a warm house than it is from a freezing one. This reinforces the snow is cold attribute.

While I loved the snow last year when it only fell a few times, I'm beginning to see why the locals don't share my positive views.

Here in New England, snow is a thing of beauty and two days ago we had a 20" snowfall. This brings tourist and the added joy of a white Christmas.
Good intel.
Tkank you.

Thats quiet a bit of snow!! I believe we are all in for a hard winter with lots of snow on its way. Now that the central heating is working again I'm feeling more positive...
have a great Xmas

I enjoyed your intel. I've never seen anyone dissect snow in such a matter-of-fact fashion.

My 3- and-5-year-old kids, born in the Philippines, see lots of snow on the TV these days. They seem to think it's a more widespread version of the styrofoam snow they see at displays in the mall. I keep trying to tell them that it's not just fun, that it can hurt your hands if you hold it too long, but they insist that I take them to somewhere where there's snow. It's all positive if you've never experienced it.
