The Meteora of Kalambaka
The Meteora are a group of monasteries in Central Greece. They are located near the town of Kalambaka, which is close to the city of Trikala. The word Meteora literally means between Earth and Heaven. These monasteries are spectacular because they are perched on the top of rocky outcrops with sheer sides. The earliest monastery was built in the 12th century CE. Before the area was opened up and roads put in, it was very hard to get to the Meteora. All supplies and people had to be hoisted up in baskets. This included all the building materials used to construct the monasteries in the first place. We went there on a wet and foggy day and it was an eerie sight seeing the rocky outcrops pushing through the clouds. During the middle ages when Greece was under attack by the Eastern Muslims, valuable artifacts and scrolls were hidden inside these inaccessible dwellings. There are tours to the monasteries, women be warned, you will be asked to wear a dress and men are not allowed to wear shorts. This is a must see place in your travels. Central Greece is beautiful and Kalambaka is about 3 hours from Athens by car. |
