The Photograph - a Gripping Novel
By Grant Goodman
As this is photography week at Qondio I am writing an article on a novel by Penelope Lively called The Photograph. Photography has has a very real impact in today's highly visual culture, and the photograph as a cultural artefact has the power to edify or destroy. This novel shows the impact on a chain of people when a photograph is found unexpectedly. The photograph in question shows the deceased wife of the main character holding hands with her brother in law, and the note accompanying the photo makes it likely that the two were having an affair. There are many twists and turns in the plot and things are not what they seem on the surface. Glynn the husband is a historian (Note: Lively studied History at Oxford and most of her novels play around history) and he explores the unpleasant implications around the photo using historical methodology. This is a nuanced novel, with many levels, is of high interest and is a can't put down read. If I say anything more I will give the story away and that would not be the right thing to do. Highly recommended as a holiday read. |
