The Power of Internet Communities
By Grant Goodman
I am constantly amazed with the power of community that one can get on the Internet. I have made many friends on the Internet who I will probably never see face to face but I know them mind to mind or soul to soul. I have enjoyed fellowship and community feeling by using the following tools: Blogs I follow a number of blogs in education and about reading and literature. This has been a rich source friendship. I also have three blogs of my own. Forums I contribute to several forums on a regular basis and have enjoyed the communal fellowship. I love the StartXchange forum. Discussion groups I am the moderator for the Yahoo Group for Virginia Woolf. Coming together with keen Woolfians and Woolf scholars has been a pleasure and I have learned a lot. I also belong to a poetry discussion group. Surfing downlines I have been a keen surfer on traffic exchanges for years. Over this time I have built many large downlines and have made many web friends and long term customers Social Networking I am a keen member of Yuwie and Facebook and this has also been fantastic for meeting new friends and building web communities. and finally Twitter This is my latest new tool to explore. It is a way of mini blogging and I love it. It is interesting that I have met many of you via these channels... |

Interesting insights, but the bottom line for me is cash flow and without the Internet I would be suffering with Social Security alone, yuch!

Thx Frederick. I think you are well past being a newbie, you are on your way to being a guru. Thanks for all your support and wisdom.
I found this intel quite profound. Many people struggle to do something with the Internet, but most get nowhere. Often, they obsess for weeks then suddenly quit. Yet your strategy of balanced moderation clearly has legs. You have a knack for this sort of thing and I would appreciate more details on how you manage your various activities so well. In any case, thank you for opening up your cyber-life. Much appreciated!

Hi Brad Let me know what you need more info on and I will write some intels. You can also check out my business blog which has hints for using the Net. http://drkelpsbusinessblog.blogspot.com Cheers Grant
Internet Communities started off as just that - a place to meet and interact with 'friends' all over the world. It was an opportunity to interact with people you would NEVER have met without the Interent 'gateway.' ALL of these 'communities' have degenerated to some degree, due to the influx of Internet Marketers flogging their wares. They are wasting their time because the greater majority of users have no interest in what they are selling. Twitter is about the ONLY effective 'purpose built community' that is for Internet Marketers, but the reverse is happening. People are leaving Facebook and Myspace and joing Twitter. I wonder if this is payback?

Thx John. I have been on the Internet ever since it started, way before web browsers. At that time any marketers were flamed. It was a community for sharing not for selling mammon I cut my teeth of IRC and Gopher etc.
Very good summary of how you use the Net, it will help others expand their experiences... A very good book about Internet community is "The Whuffie Factor", Author Tara Hunt. It´s on Amazon.... You may of already read it?
