Use Problems to Succeed
By Grant Goodman
How do you view problems? As an opportunity to disclaim and push them onto others, or as an opportunity to find solutions? Self-starters see problems as a springboard to solutions and to success. When Edison was inventing he had a particular problem and after 998 tries he still didn't have an answer. On attempt 999, a co-worker asked him if he was discouraged with his progress. His answer is fantastic - NO, I have found 998 ways how not to do it, not long after this he found the solution, and the rest is history. Another related saying is that genius is 10% inspiration plus 90% perspiration. Tenacity in problem solving leads to success. Don't give up the first, second or 10th time, try, try and try again. A young man asked Thomas Watson Snr (the founder of IBM) what he could do to double his success rate, and Watson replied, quadruple your failure rate. Look at Abraham Lincoln - he had so many failures but in the end he became one of America's top Presidents. So the secret of success is this: when you see a problem, pick it up yourself before someone else grabs it. The road to success is paved with failure, but those who persevere win through. |
