Working for a Startup Software Company I started at a newly angel funded software development company in 2001. It was one of the highlights of my career to date. Being surrounded by dynamic people who had terrific ideas was very invigorating. We were going to take on the world and beat all the competition. The journey was bumpy and fun. I met some real oddball characters along the way. The dress code was very casual and skateboarding was allowed on our floor. We worked incredibly long hours but were fuelled by pizza and diet coke. The sense of common direction was very strong and everyone was 100% committed. It was code and bust, no versioning, scope creep as big as an elephant and any system was resisted by the fantastic programmers I was working with. We had 38 MD's working for us as well which made the whole development cycle fraught with difficulty. If you have 12 doctors, you have 13 opinions (or more). The doctors drove the programmers crazy and vice versa. But we got our product out on time and the company is now in a mature stage and the fun has gone out of it 7 years later. I still consult to the company as CIO, but I'm keeping an eye out for another startup to work in, there is no substitute for the excitement of working on something innovative and freeform.
