Yum Cha - an alternative Brunch

By Grant Goodman

I got a call early Sunday morning from an old friend who invited us to have Yum Cha. I accepted of course as I love Chines food in general, and Yum Cha in particular. Yum Cha is a form of Chinese brunch that you eat between 10am and 2pm. The food comes around on trollies and you select the food of your choice.

This morning we atarted off with Congee, a form of rice porridge which can have vegetables and shrimps/meat added as well. We followed this up with pork buns, pork and peanut dumplings, chicken feet, sticky rice and Chinese tea, a very pleasant and tasty repast.

Yum cha actually means drink tea and traditionally involves tea, dim sum (the small dishes of food) and the dining experience itself. It is not unlike the concept of Spanish tapas.

I love a full English breakfast but it is nice to have a change. If you have never tried Yum cha try it out at a Chinese restaurant near you.

This looks pretty good. I think that sometimes, especially in England and the USA, we eat our food too fast, and forget to enjoy our food. Taking the time to enjoy the whole experience of eating makes you feel better, it's all good for the soul. Now you have me hungry again...

I only like certain menu items as far as Chinese food is concerned. I've never been to a brunch of any kind. The closest I've come to an experience like that was when a friend of mine and I went to a fondue restaurant in Chicago. You were encouraged to take your time and enjoy. I'd love to do it again.

If you get down to new Orleans James, there is a Sunday Brunch at the Court Of The Two Sisters that can't be beat - at least if you like Cajun food. It's typically a mix of Breakfast and Lunchtime food, and they have some fantastic dishes to choose from. You can eat there for hours, listening to Jazz, and sitting in a secluded courtyard or quaint restaurant room.
